It can sometimes be impossible to keep up with the latest health and wellness trends, especially when it comes to eating habits. An anti-diet philosophy called intuitive eating is becoming increasingly popular.

The concept is not new. Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, two registered dietitians, published “Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Anti-Diet Approach” in 1995. The book was designed to help people create healthy body image while learning to make peace with food. In its fourth edition, the guide covers the 10 principles that form the basis of the intuitive eating movement. Recent issues address diet culture, weight stigma, and baby-guided weaning for nursing mothers.

What does intuitive eating look like in practice?

“It’s a no-diet approach to food. It challenges some of the things we’ve been taught about diet, health, and weight, ”says Lori Chong, a registered nutritionist and certified diabetes advisor at Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center.

Chong says she was interested in incorporating this approach to eating into patient care because of her work that has seen firsthand the negative effects “yo-yo diets” have on people’s physical and mental health.

“I see people following diet after diet in hopes that this is the magic solution,” she says. “Chasing these different diets puts a lot of emotional effort into a person’s life.” Your body can be physically damaged if you lose weight and then gain weight again quickly. Chong credits the increasing movement of body positivity for making intuitive eating more conscious.

This type of eating helps people think differently about food, but it also challenges a common narrative that exercise is only for burning calories. “Sport is about exercise because it just feels good to move your body,” explains Chong. “You don’t want to focus on an exercise that is wearing you down.”

Ultimately, intuitive eating is about helping people make peace with food. “It’s about giving yourself unconditional permission to eat,” she says. “You give yourself permission to eat a certain food and there are no limits.”

Chong says that at some point people get tired of a meal that they used to punish themselves for eating if they give themselves permission to enjoy it. For example, someone might allow themselves to eat potato chips every day. According to Chong, no one will choose just this food every day. Once people remove restrictions on certain foods, they can understand what different foods feel like.

“There are certain types of foods that help with energy and certain foods that zap us with that energy,” added Chong. “When we start listening to our bodies, we realize it.”
