The government has promised to vaccinate everyone over 50 by the spring – although they haven’t set an exact date yet.

Mr Shapps told LBC today that he was the last person to seek advice after flying to Spain with his family last year to put the country on the quarantine list and head straight back home.

And while the nation was in the midst of the worst part of the pandemic, he expressed caution when booking another getaway.

He was asked this morning, “Would you advise my listeners to book a summer vacation?”

And he replied: “I think we need to realize right now that we are still in the grip of this pandemic.

“I think the hospitals are full to the brim and there are 36,000 in the hospital with a high number of deaths.

“Right now we are making sure that we stay home and that we are doing the right thing.”

When he pressed it again, he added, “I’m just telling you, I had this question last year, I said then, I wasn’t then.

“We then set up the travel corridors. I booked my vacation and went to Spain.

“Then the first thing I did was put Spain on the list of travel corridors within an hour of my arrival. Don’t let me advise you!”
