Dublin explorer donates journey e-book to each nursing dwelling nationwide

A Dublin explorer donates a book of photos from his travels around the world to all nursing home residences in Ireland.

Vincent Butler will be giving every nursing home across the country a copy of his book documenting visits to distant destinations.

He wrote ‘Sixty Photographs for Simon’ in 2018 to raise funds for the Simon Community Charity.

The book contains 60 photographs of landscapes and wildlife taken in 25 countries from the Arctic to the Antarctic.

Mr Butler has raised € 12,357 to date for the homeless charity and is currently running a similar fundraiser to donate his book to schools.

In the months leading up to Christmas, he first asked a few friends if they would agree to set up a Facebook fundraiser for the Simon community.

A copy of his book will be donated to a school or nursing home for € 10 each.

A group of 18 people came together to raise funds and their “sterling efforts” mean a copy will be made to each of Ireland’s 456 nursing homes.

The first batch of 230 books was shipped last week, the rest were shipped yesterday.

Hello everybody,
I just got back from returning the second batch of 220 nursing home books to the Newbridge An Post Depot.

“Pleasant distraction” for the residents

On Facebook, Mr Butler wrote, “Hopefully it will be a pleasant distraction for residents and staff during these difficult and challenging times of separation from family and friends.”

He added: “I am pleased to report that the Irish tradition of the ‘meitheal’, the coming together of a group of people to help in the fulfillment of a task for one of their companions, is still very much alive here in our world good is wonderful country. “

Mr Butler also thanked An Post for their “Freepost” service for nursing homes during Covid-19, “without which this initiative would not have been possible”.

He hopes that a large number of schools across the country will also receive copies of the books in the coming months if travel restrictions are eased.

‘Sixty Photographs for Simon’ can be bought here. All proceeds go directly to the Simon Community.
