This home (4 bedrooms, 2 baths) was designed by Beverly Thorne (who loved the challenge of fitting it into steep slopes) and built in 1962 and uses steel structure to create an indoor and outdoor living experience. It is also the only case study house in Northern California. Even better: you can spend the night in it and enjoy the history, the contemporary furniture, the top-class appliances and of course the view.

The owner of this property (7 bedrooms, 7.5 baths) probably doesn’t want people throwing wild parties there, but if ever a home demands just that, this is it. Where do I start? Perhaps the indoor pool flanked by pillars, the sauna, the whirlpool, the fitness studio with a view of the bay, the countless terraces, the fire pits, the tennis court, the trampoline or the bowling green? Or maybe just the really magical terrain with all sorts of hidden corners and delightful surprises.
What guests say: “The house was exactly as advertised: a beautiful retreat that was so comfortable that we would have been completely satisfied not to venture out. The grounds made for one wonderful surprise after another: the winter garden and the badminton / tetherball court, the campsite and the fountain in the courtyard, the sculptures and the chess game, the hammocks and many seating areas for reading and watching the world go by. “Daisy Barringer is an SF-based writer who loves nothing more than a spontaneous road trip to Northern California.
