It’s been a year. Living in isolation (or spending far too much time with others), only wearing soft clothing, binge-watching Ted Lasso (just us? cool …) and stress bake. On the way to a sad milestone – our first Valentine’s Day in quarantine – like everyone else, we are trying to figure out how to celebrate love under lock and key. Vaccinations!

If that doesn’t work, there’s food.

California donutsWorking with Ring Pop, a family-owned business that has been around since 1982, they made Valentine’s Day-themed donuts with heart-shaped rings in the center. If only runways were open, you would have somewhere to display your edible jewelry once you’ve eaten your donut.

Popular Santa Ana on site Vegan from Victoria makes all kinds of delicacies including Pan Dulce, Tres Leches and Flan. Unfortunately, their V-Day range of fragile chocolate hearts filled with chocolate-coated goodies is already sold out – apparently there was a white chocolate run – but their chocolate-dipped strawberries and heart-shaped conchas are still available.

With locations in Silver Lake and Pasadena, family owned and operated lark has been serving beautiful but no frills baked goods since 2007. For Valentine’s Day 2021, cupcakes and heart-shaped cakes in various flavors will be made for pre-order. They also have limited choices on the day of, so plan accordingly. Available for pickup or delivery.

Since we believe in everything heart shaped, there are a few ways to show your love in the form of melted cheese + bread. (We also have this handy pizza media that is organized by regional pizza styles.)

  • Abbott’s pizza – This pizzeria on the west side has heart shaped cakes. Now that you know why would you ever Order “normal” pizza again?
  • Paper Pizza Co. – In Downey, Paper Pizza has both a heart-shaped pizza and A heart-shaped sausage board on the Valentine’s Day menu.
  • The Heights Deli and Bottle Shop – Located in Lincoln Heights, The Heights Deli offers a heart-shaped pizza over the phone for Valentine’s Day. If you throw in a bottle of Lambrusco, you’re done.

What started as a social media joke after Donald Trump’s (first) impeachment became a limited edition vodka from the LA-based distiller Collect. This peach-flavored vodka is called Impeachment proceedings, comes in a pink bottle and contains “notes of rose, ginger and red currant”. A portion of all sales go to the Foundation of the restaurant workers’ association.

If you are over valentine’s day, Severance Wine Bar does its annual BreakUp Bar: Anti Valentine’s Day Pop up until February 14th. They offer sweets, sausages, and cocktails. Whichever package you choose (the “wasted two years of my life” looks tempting), you will find something that will soothe your broken heart.
