GRAND RAPIDS, me. (WOOD) – There are so many family-friendly events happening in West Michigan this weekend. Spring is just around the corner, so go outside and enjoy the slightly warmer weather or check out one of the virtual events this weekend!

FREE CHILDREN’S FILMS AT CELEBRATIONS

Kids get free movie tickets at Flick’s Family Film Festival – this weekend’s film is “The War with Grandpa”! Children are free and adult tickets are only $ 5. Here you can choose your show time and reserve your seats.

BACKYARD SUGARING SESSIONS WITH BLANDFORD

The Blandford Nature Center is hosting a Backyard Sugaring Session this Friday at 11am where you can learn how to tap into the maple tree in your yard to make syrup! To register, click here. They also have a Saturday class where you can explore the trails with a Blandford educator who can show you how to identify trees and collect sap. Or you can rent snowshoes and explore or hike for free!

ROLLERSKATING RINKS ARE OPEN

West Michigan roller skating rinks are open and ready for families to skate! You can visit the GR Skate & Event Center in Kentwood or the Byron Center, roller skating at Tarry Hall, the ice rink in Holland, Jumpin ‘Jupiter in Muskegon and Roller Fox in Ravenna. Check with the respective ice rink for updated opening times and social distancing restrictions.

SEE BUTTERFLIES AT MEIJER GARDENS

Get ready! Butterflies are back in Frederick Meijer Gardens! From March 1st you can see the butterflies bloom with 7,000 tropical butterflies and 60 different species. In the meantime, be sure to visit Frederick Meijer Gardens this weekend and enjoy the outdoors. For hours, ticket prices, and more, visit MeijerGardens.org.

FRIDAY NIGHT FRENZY IN THE ALTITUDE TRAMPOLINE PARK

Take the kids for a fun exercise that will get some of their energy out! Altitude Trampoline Park offers Friday Night Frenzy from 7pm to 10pm for $ 16.95 per ticket. Book in advance so you get a spot! They currently have limited capacity, social distancing measures, and expanded cleaning protocols.

VIRTUAL TASTE OF THE SOUL EVENT AT GRPL

The Taste of Soul of the Grand Rapids Public Library is virtual for one final weekend this year! Support Black History Month locally by showing your GRPL library card at participating restaurants by February 28 for a $ 5.00 discount! To see all participating restaurants, click here.

LAST WEEKEND OF THE WINTER WORLD

It’s officially the last weekend of World of Winter! If you haven’t checked it out already, check out all of the art installations along with so many other events and entertainment options. See what’s going on last weekend on the Facebook page and use this map to explore the city’s surroundings.

Check out the stars at the Grand Rapids Public Museum

The Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium is open in the Grand Rapids Public Museum. Every day at 2pm you can visit Under Starlit Skies to explore the wonders of the night sky! A live moderator will help you find planets and constellations from your own garden. Then you can explore the rest of the museum! Masks and pre-purchased tickets are required at the museum. VIRTUAL SAFARI WITH JOHN BALL ZOO

The John Ball Zoo offers virtual safaris every weekend! Visit up close and personal information about various animals for 30 minutes this Saturday at 10 a.m. This Saturday is perfect if your kid is interested in creepy, crawling bugs! Find out all about cockroaches, which are great for the environment. The event costs $ 3 for members and $ 5 for non-members and you can register here!

BLACK HISTORY MONTH VIRTUAL STORIES

The Grand Rapids Public Library is hosting a virtual storytime this Saturday at 10 a.m. (and every Saturday in February) with a book with black characters or a black author. The event is free! Put on your most comfortable clothes, get yourself a nice blanket, and keep educating yourself without leaving your home.
