The first step in planning a Walt Disney World vacation is deciding the best time to go. Work, school, and other family responsibilities will all influence your decision, but there are other important factors to consider as well. This includes the crowd, the cost (promotions), the weather, seasonal events, parking times, etc.

Given the pandemic, picking the best week for Walt Disney World in 2021 is no easy task. But let’s see what we know about these pre-pandemic factors.

Crowds in Walt Disney World

Crowds are an inevitable part of the Disney experience. That said, some times of the year are less crowded than others.

In general, the amount is less on weekdays outside of holidays (i.e., during school hours) and when Disney theme parks are open for shorter hours. Conversely, the amount is highest on weekends, bank holidays, when the school is not occupied (spring break, summer break, fall break, Christmas / New Year) and when the operating hours in Disney’s theme parks are longer. It can also be helpful to check a crowd calendar that estimates the crowd each day in each park.

Based on these historical factors, we expect the best times to visit Walt Disney World will be in 2021:

  • January 25th – February 11th
  • February 22nd – March 5th
  • April 19-29
  • Weekdays in May
  • Last 2 weeks in August – end of September (minus Labor Day weekend)
  • Weekdays in October and November (minus Thanksgiving week / weekends)
  • Weekdays in December (minus the weeks before Christmas and New Year)

We expect the worst times to visit Walt Disney World in 2021 will be:

  • 1.-11. January; January 18-20
  • February 12-21
  • March 6th – April 11th
  • Weekends in May
  • June, July and the first 2 weeks of August
  • Thanksgiving week and weekends
  • The last two weeks of December (Christmas and New Years)

Disney changed its ticket prices to incentivize visitors with lower prices in less crowded times. While the crowds have evened out more as a result, the trend remains largely intact. September and October are some of the best times to visit, and vacation weeks, weekends, school holidays, and summer remain the most crowded times of the year.

Least Expensive Time to Visit Walt Disney World

In a typical year, the best time to visit Walt Disney World is when demand is low. Walt Disney World has special promotions year round. These often include the free Disney Dining Plan offerings and discounted vacation packages for hotel stays, theme park tickets, or a combination of both. Disney’s promotions are an incentive to attract more visitors during the slower seasons.

The most expensive time of the year to visit Disney World is when the demand is greatest. In addition to the above timeframes when the parks are most crowded, demand (and prices) tend to be higher when Disney is hosting a special event or festival.

Month after month weather and events

The Central Florida region is prone to hot, humid, and stormy weather in the summer months and mild to cool temperatures in the winter months. Most people prefer Florida’s spring and fall weather, but the winter weather is still quite nice.

Here’s an overview of what to expect for each month:

Festival of Arts stock photo

  • Average high: 71 °
  • Average low: 52 °
  • Rainfall days: 5

January is Disney’s coldest month, but that doesn’t say much. Once the crowd has subsided on New Years Eve, January is a great time to visit Walt Disney World. The crowd is light and the temperatures aren’t bad (if you don’t mind layering). It gets dark earlier and the operating hours are shorter. Epcot’s newest festival, the Festival of the Arts, starts in January and has quickly become a fan favorite over the winter months.

  • Average high: 73 °
  • Average low: 54 °
  • Rainfall days: 5

It’s not overcrowded in early February, but there’s a huge boost in the middle of the month as schools close for the February vacation. As in January, the daylight hours and opening times of the theme park will be reduced.

  • Average high: 78 °
  • Average low: 56 °
  • Rainfall days: 5

The Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival begins in March, and the park experiences the best weather Florida sees year-round. As long as you avoid the spring break crowd, March is a lovely month to go to the park.

Mr & Mrs Easter Bunny visit the Magic Kingdom!

  • Average high: 82 °
  • Average low: 63 °
  • Rainfall days: 3

April brings beautiful flowers to the parks and the weather is generally pleasant. Disney is crowded during the Easter break as the parks fill up with vacationing families and students. Children can meet the Easter Bunny and Magic Kingdom is holding the Easter Parade on Easter Sunday.

  • Average high: 87 °
  • Average low: 69 °
  • Rainfall days: 7

Disney is really heating up in May. With the exception of Memorial Day weekend, which is notorious for its large crowd, May is usually not too crowded. If you like it warm (but not scorching hot) this is a good month for you.

  • Average high: 89 °
  • Average low: 73 °
  • Rainfall days: 11

The amount in June is moderate to heavy and rain is quite frequent. The parks are open late so you may want to start early, then swim by your hotel pool at lunchtime, and return to the parks later in the afternoon.

  • Average high: 90 °
  • Average low: 75 °
  • Rainfall days: 13

July is characterized by sunny, humid weather and a lot of rain. The park is crowded for the Magic Kingdom fireworks on July 4th, but they are truly spectacular and well worth the trip. If you don’t like crowds and hot weather, July is probably a good month to avoid.

  • Average high: 91 °
  • Average low: 75 °
  • Rainfall days: 13

August is all about the air conditioning and the pool. Don’t forget that Walt Disney World has two amazing water parks. The crowd is large during the first half of the month, but then it subsides as the children prepare to go back to school.

  • Average high: 89 °
  • Average low: 74 °
  • Rainfall days: 9

Central Florida stays hot and humid in September, but it’s still a great month to travel to Walt Disney World. The park is much less crowded because the kids have gone back to school. Two popular events, the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival and Mickey’s not-so-scary Halloween party, usually start in August and last through September and October.

  • Average high: 84 °
  • Average low: 68 °
  • Rainfall days: 5

October is probably the best month of the year to visit Disney World. The temperatures and humidity are dropping, the crowds are light to moderate and the weather is just wonderful. Additionally, Epcot is still home to the Food and Wine Festival, and Mickey’s not-so-scary Halloween party is making headway.

  • Average high: 77 °
  • Average low: 60 °
  • Rainfall days: 4

The weather is fantastic in November. The crowd tends to be low in the first half of the month and you should be able to get on the rides without waiting too long. However, Thanksgiving Week is extremely crowded as schools are on break. You can check out Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party towards the end of the month. As long as you avoid Thanksgiving Week, November is a great month to plan a Disney vacation.

  • Average high: 74 °
  • Average low: 56 °
  • Rainfall days: 4

December begins with light to moderate crowds and a festive atmosphere. The lovely decorations and Mickey’s Merry Christmas party make the first two weeks one of the best times to be at Disney World. But the crowd swells around Christmas and New Years, making it difficult to stay in the happy holiday mood with so many people.

Which month is the best?

The best month to visit Walt Disney World depends on your vacation destinations and what fits on your schedule. However, if you can choose your days carefully, you can take advantage of shorter lines, better weather, and some of the seasonal events.

If all things are the same, the best months for Disney World are September, October, November (minus Thanksgiving week), and early December.

The fall months usually feature lighter crowds, pleasant weather, festive Christmas decorations, and magical holiday events like Mickey’s not-so-scary Halloween party and Mickey’s Merry Christmas. It really is a perfect combination!

Visit to Walt Disney World in 2021

2020 has proven to be a very difficult year for the travel industry and Disney World is no exception.

On March 15, Disney closed the park as the coronavirus pandemic spread across the country. The resort began a gradual reopening on July 11th, with a number of safeguards in place. These include reduced capacity, mask requirements, social distancing, hand sanitizing stations, reduced entertainment and character options, and delayed restaurant and resort reopenings.

This “new normal” is likely to be in effect for much of 2021. However, Walt Disney World is still very open to business. It is up to you to decide if this is the right time for you and your family.
